  2. Living in the southern appalachians I use a tarp and mesh tent combo depending on how you stake the tarp you can have full protection or ventilation

  4. To item 13 (bring backup navigation), I highly recommend bringing a compass (e.g., Silva Ranger, SUUNTO MC-2) and the knowledge to use it along with a topographic map (as shown). Finding your location on a map is rather easy using triangulation of visible landmarks with a capable compass.
